Wood Engraving

Laser wood burning requires less than 10 watts.

One of the first uses of laser engraving was to burn images directly on wood. Laser wood burning requires less than 10 watts. Walnut, mahogany, oak, maple, and other hardwoods produce good results. Softwoods tend to vaporize or ignite at less consistent depths. Lowest power, quickest speed, and a blowing fan are required for softwood. Hard papers and fiberboard are good materials, but linty papers and newsprint are like softwoods. Fur cannot be laser engraved. Laser engraved finished leathers look similar to hot-branding. Some latex rubber materials can be laser engraved. These are used in the manufacture of inking stamps.

Paper masking tape may be used on finished and resinous woods before engraving to prevent sticky buildup and smoky halos from forming around the engraved areas due to the heat. Cleanup is simply a matter of pulling off the tape and doesn’t require a varnish-removing solvent.
