Flat Table or Drum Engraving

In flat table or drum engraving, the laser beam is adjusted to focus on a fixed penetration depth to ensure consistency in the depth and amount of material removed during engraving.

In flat table or drum engraving, the laser beam is adjusted to focus on a fixed penetration depth to ensure consistency in the depth and amount of material removed during engraving. A machined stick or angle-iron can be used by technologists to adjust the engraver for proper focusing. This setup is used for surfaces that are consistent in height without appreciable variation.

More precise focusing mechanisms have been developed for surfaces that vary in height. Dynamic, or auto-focusing, systems adjust the depth of the beam in real time as the material is being etched. The height and depth of the material is monitored with devices using ultrasound, infrared, or visible light aimed at the surface. These devices, known as pilot beams or pilot lasers, help guide adjustments made to the lens of the laser for determining the optimal focus on the surface for the efficient removal of material.
