Stone and GlassIt can be very challenging to laser engrave stone or glass. Stone and glass do not vaporize easily. Sandblasting or tools with diamond drills or wheels are often still preferred for engraving these materials. However, when a laser beam hits glass or stone, it fractures. When heated very quickly, natural grains and crystalline stubs in the pores of the material pop out due to their fast expansion relative to their surroundings. If the intensity, speed, and focus are just right, excellent results may be achieved in laser engraving glass. Large “fill” areas, however, should be avoided because the results may be uneven. Even so, this could be an advantage depending on the artistic effect desired.
